Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most serious challenges affecting women and girls in many communities across South Sudan. Harmful social norms, economic hardship, conflict, and limited access to protection services often leave women and girls vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and exploitation.
At Change Agency Organization (CAO), we are committed to promoting a society where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination. Through our Gender-Based Violence Prevention Program, we work with communities to prevent GBV, support survivors, and promote gender equality.
Our initiatives focus on community awareness, survivor support, advocacy, and empowerment, ensuring that women and girls have access to protection, dignity, and opportunities to thrive.
CAO adopts a community-based and survivor-centered approach to preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
We collaborate closely with:
Community leaders
Women’s groups
Youth networks
Local authorities
Schools and community institutions
By engaging entire communities in addressing the root causes of GBV, we promote sustainable solutions that transform harmful norms and strengthen protective environments.
Our programs aim to ensure that survivors receive respect, support, and access to services while communities become active agents of prevention.
Many cases of gender-based violence are linked to deeply rooted social norms and lack of awareness about women’s rights.
CAO conducts community awareness programs to:
Educate communities about the impacts of GBV
Promote respect and gender equality
Encourage positive attitudes toward women and girls
Mobilize community leaders to speak out against violence
These efforts help communities recognize the harmful effects of GBV and take collective action to prevent it.
Survivors of gender-based violence often face stigma, isolation, and limited access to support services. CAO works with local networks to ensure survivors receive appropriate assistance and protection.
Our support initiatives include:
Providing confidential referral pathways for survivors
Connecting survivors to medical and psychosocial services
Supporting safe community environments for reporting violence
Advocating for survivor-centered responses
These services help survivors regain dignity, safety, and hope.
Empowering women economically and socially plays a critical role in preventing gender-based violence.
CAO promotes women’s empowerment through:
Leadership training for women and girls
Community advocacy initiatives
Support for women’s participation in decision-making
Awareness on women’s rights and gender equality
When women have stronger voices and opportunities, communities become safer and more equitable.
Ending gender-based violence requires the active involvement of men and boys. CAO works with male community members to promote positive masculinity and respectful relationships.
Activities include:
Community dialogues involving men and boys
Awareness campaigns on respectful relationships
Youth engagement initiatives
Male champions for gender equality
These programs encourage men and boys to become advocates for protecting women and girls.
CAO supports the establishment and strengthening of community-based structures that help prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
These include:
Community protection committees
Women’s support groups
Youth advocacy groups
Community reporting and referral systems
These local mechanisms ensure that communities actively participate in safeguarding women and girls.
Through our GBV prevention initiatives, CAO has supported communities across Western Equatoria State, including:
Yambio County
Nzara County
Tambura County
Ezo County
Our programs have contributed to:
Increased community awareness of gender-based violence
Greater support for women’s rights and gender equality
Strengthened community protection systems
Improved access to support services for survivors
By working directly with communities, CAO helps create safer environments where women and girls can live free from fear and violence.
Gender-based violence has far-reaching consequences that affect individuals, families, and entire communities. Preventing GBV is essential for promoting human rights and sustainable development.
Effective GBV prevention contributes to:
Improved health and wellbeing
Greater gender equality
Stronger families and communities
Increased participation of women in development
Long-term peace and stability
Investing in GBV prevention is an investment in the dignity, safety, and future of communities.
