Children are the foundation of every community’s future. Yet in many parts of South Sudan, children face serious threats to their safety and development. Conflict, poverty, displacement, and social inequalities expose children to risks such as abuse, neglect, child labor, early marriage, and exploitation.
At Change Agency Organization (CAO), protecting children is at the heart of our mission. Through our Child Protection Program, we work with families, communities, institutions, and local authorities to create safe environments where children can grow, learn, and reach their full potential.
Our work focuses on strengthening community-based protection systems that safeguard children from harm while promoting their rights, wellbeing, and participation in society.
CAO uses a community-driven approach that empowers local actors to take an active role in protecting children.
We collaborate with:
Community leaders
Parents and caregivers
Schools and teachers
Youth groups
Local government institutions
Civil society organizations
By building strong partnerships within communities, we help establish sustainable protection mechanisms that continue to safeguard children long after individual projects end.
Our programs integrate education, awareness, advocacy, and direct support, ensuring that children are protected both at home and in their communities.
Many children face risks of physical abuse, emotional violence, exploitation, and neglect. CAO works to prevent these forms of harm by strengthening awareness and community responsibility.
Our prevention activities include:
Community awareness campaigns on child rights
Training parents and caregivers on child protection practices
Promoting safe and supportive family environments
Engaging community leaders to address harmful practices
These efforts help communities recognize child protection risks and take collective action to prevent them.
Early marriage remains one of the major barriers to the safety, education, and wellbeing of girls in many communities.
CAO works with families, schools, and community leaders to:
Promote awareness about the harmful impacts of early marriage
Advocate for the rights of girls to education and protection
Encourage community commitments to delay marriage
Support girls to stay in school and pursue their ambitions
By addressing early marriage, CAO helps protect girls’ futures and strengthen gender equality.
Communities play a crucial role in protecting children. CAO supports the creation and strengthening of community child protection networks that monitor risks and respond to child protection concerns.
These structures help:
Identify vulnerable children
Provide community-based support
Report child protection violations
Link families with relevant services
Such systems ensure that child protection becomes a shared responsibility within communities.
Children have the right to safety, education, healthcare, and participation in decisions that affect their lives.
CAO promotes child rights by:
Conducting child rights awareness campaigns
Supporting community dialogues on child protection
Engaging youth and children in advocacy activities
Promoting child participation in community initiatives
These activities help build a culture where children are respected, heard, and protected.
Many children affected by poverty, displacement, or family disruption require additional support to remain safe and continue their education.
CAO works with communities to support vulnerable children through:
Referral to social support services
Educational support initiatives
Psychosocial support activities
Community mentoring and support networks
By addressing both protection and wellbeing, we help vulnerable children regain stability and hope.
Through our child protection initiatives, Change Agency Organization has supported communities across Western Equatoria State, including:
Yambio County
Nzara County
Tambura County
Ezo County
Our work has contributed to:
Increased awareness of child rights among community members
Strengthened community protection mechanisms
Greater community engagement in safeguarding children
Improved support systems for vulnerable children
By empowering communities to protect their children, we are helping build a safer and more resilient future.
Protecting children is not only a moral responsibility—it is essential for sustainable development.
Strong child protection systems contribute to:
Improved education outcomes
Reduced gender inequality
Healthier families and communities
Greater social stability
Long-term peace and development
Investing in child protection today ensures that future generations can grow in safe, supportive environments.
